Grooming

Grooming your Shiloh Shepherd is essential to maintain their health and appearance, especially given their thick double coats. Here’s a comprehensive step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Essential Grooming Tools

Before you begin, gather the following tools:
– Undercoat rake – to remove loose undercoat.
– Slicker brush – for detangling and removing loose hair.
– Wide-toothed comb – to smooth out tangles.
– Flea comb – for fine detailing and checking for parasites.
– Electric clippers – for trimming paw pads.
– Thinning shears – for shaping around the feet.
– Dog-safe shampoo and conditioner – for bathing.
– High-velocity dryer – for efficient drying.
– Nail clippers or grinder – for nail maintenance.
– Dog ear cleaner and cotton balls – for ear hygiene.
– Dog toothbrush and toothpaste – for dental care.

Step-by-Step Grooming Guide

1. Brushing and De-shedding
– Undercoat Removal: Begin with an undercoat rake to remove loose undercoat, especially during shedding seasons. Avoid using the furminator, as it damages the coat.
– Detangling: Use a slicker brush to detangle and remove loose hair.
– Combing: Follow up with a wide-toothed comb to smooth out any remaining tangles.
– Fine Detailing: Use a flea comb to check for parasites and fine-tune the grooming.

Focus on areas prone to matting, such as the neck, chest, and behind the ears. Regular brushing, ideally two to three times a week, helps prevent mats and reduces shedding.

2. Bathing
– Frequency: Bathe and groom your Shiloh Shepherd every 4–6 weeks.
– Shampooing: Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo to avoid skin irritation.
– Conditioning: Apply a dog-safe conditioner to maintain coat health.
– Drying: Use a high-velocity dryer to thoroughly dry the coat and get excess hair out, which helps prevent matting.

3. Trimming
– Paw Pads: Use electric clippers to trim excess hair between the paw pads.
– Feet Shaping: Employ thinning shears to tidy up the hair around the feet and between the toes for a neat appearance.
Note: Trimming should be minimal and focused on hygiene, neatness and keeping things looking natural

4. Nail Care
– Trimming: Check and trim your dog’s nails every 3–4 weeks to prevent overgrowth and discomfort. Dremeling our dogs nails, will allow you to get the nails shorter and recede the quick.
– Technique: Use dog nail clippers or a grinder, taking care not to cut into the quick.

5. Ear Cleaning
– Inspection: Regularly check your dog’s ears for signs of wax buildup or infection.
– Cleaning: Use a dog-safe ear cleaner and cotton balls to gently clean the ears.

6. Dental Hygiene
– Brushing: Brush your dog’s teeth at least two to three times a week using dog-specific toothpaste, daily is best.
– Dental Chews: Provide dental chews to help maintain oral health between brushings.
